Yes, only softball rule set that has an about to receive clause is the NCAA, and that is defined as the ball being closer to the defender than the runner.

Yes, but this wasn't a thrown ball, it was a loose ball in the field of play the a defender was chasing. This is OBS everywhere, every time.

Was answering the question just above that response asking if it was only a batted ball and not a thrown ball that allowed a defender to obstruct the runner.

Understand. My concern is that even the OP was erroneous in referring to this as a "thrown" ball. And even in NCAA, it isn't just a thrown ball, but a ball that is about to be received. .
