they’ll just get a nice lump or a mild concussion. Concussions are very serious, but masks offer little to no protection against them.

1) No such thing as a "mild" concussion.

2) Masks offer some protection-they are designed to protect the face, not to protect the wearer from everything. I saw a player with a mask get a concussion- she was backpedalling for a pop-up to the shallow OF when she fell and her head bounced offthe ground, taking a good portion of impact. nothing you can do about that. even with a helmet!

DD is currently recovering from her 4th concussion- none of them happened in softball, but she will wear the mask in the IF.

Actually, there is such a thing as a "mild" concussion. Here are the three main grading systems for concussions:

That's a medical technicality. All concussions are serious. Certainly, I would want my DD to have a "mild" concussion rather than a "severe" concussion if it comes to that, but they are all serious. Especially concerning is that in some cases, people who suffer concussions become sensitized and are at greater risk for repeat concussions.

A concussion if a form of "Traumatic Brain Injury". A concussion is the mildest form of TBI. Yes, all concussions are serious.

In the original quoted post by Obbay it states "they’ll just get a nice lump or a mild concussion. Concussions are very serious, but masks offer little to no protection against them." In this context, the original poster is referring to the grade level of the concussion, not a concussion that is so "mild" that it can be ignored. My post was to educate about the severity levels of concussion grading systems.

I think you have to conclude that the hunter who can kill a lion or tiger with his bare hands has demonstrated greater skills than any of the other hunters and I would pick this hunter over those who hide behind spears or guns or face masks.

You are missing my point, maybe the guy hiding with a gun can kill a Lion with his bare hands, but chooses not to because that's just plain dumb and an unnecessary risk

This is from the Mayo Clinic website "Your brain has the consistency of gelatin. It's cushioned from everyday jolts and bumps by cerebrospinal fluid inside your skull. A violent blow to your head and neck or upper body can cause your brain to slide back and forth forcefully against the inner walls of your skull. "

The little foam pads on fielding masks offer ZERO protection from preventing the head from snapping back or the brain from bouncing around inside your skull.

Masks will help prevent bruising of the face and save some teeth, if the ball is hit at a speed where the mask will hold up. Since there's no data available nobody knows at just what that speed is. Someone mentioned a ball flying off the bat at 71 mph. Facemasks on helmets are tested to prevent breaking down at 60 mph. If that's the case, how much prevention is a fielding mask really giving you?

I'm fine with kids wearing masks and I made DD wear one. I don't think in any in any way the mean a child is afraid of the ball and I don't believe they're a great hindrance in the recruiting process. Masks are great for offering limited protection. However proponents often go WAY beyond what they're actually designed for to "prove" why they should be mandated. If safety and protecting the children is really the goal, the discussion should be about wearing helmets in the field.

Superman doesn't wear a mask because Batman's mask won't help one bit if he got hit in the face with a softball. Maybe if they were made as strongly as softball batting helmets we'd see more superheroes wearing them.

Ask any concussion specialist and they will tell you this chart is out of date. Over 90% of people who experience a concussion do not lose consciousness. The severity of a concussion is not determined by a loss of consciousness. DD2 experienced a concussion doing a tumbling routine on a trampoline track. She over-rotated on a tuck, landed on the back of her head. Never lost consciousness. Even though she hit a forgiving surface, the results of the ImPACT showed she experienced a major trauma. She was not cleared to resume gymnastics or school work for three months. Severity is independent of loss of consciousness. Every case is unique and the severity cannot be determined by a field observation.
