Batter bunts the ball. The ball travels up the 1B line for a few feet. Catcher grabs and throw the ball. The ball hits the defensive player at 1B. The ball hit the defensive player at 1B about the same time the batter-runner was stepping on 1B. There was a double first base. The batter runner was stepping on the white bag rather than the orange bag.

The umpire ruled the runner out.

Was that correct?

Was the umpires ruling interference, or did they call the batter/runner out for stepping on the white base? Based on your description I would not believe it to be interference, and if he called the batter/runner out for stepping on the white base that is an appeal that must be made by the defense prior to the batter/runner returning to 1st.

Why would the defense appeal the out call?

My point was, if the umpire called the batter/runner out for going to the white base it is not a call he should have made. That is an appeal that must be made by the defense prior to the batter/runner returning to the base. The umpire is to call the play based on did the runner beat the throw to 1st or not.

Hang on. The ball HIT the defensive player? And the umpire ruled the BR out simply for touching the wrong base? That would not be the correct call.

which side of the baseline was the runner on? infield or foul side ( runners box )

Irrelevant to the OP

I don't know the reason for the umpire's call.

Here is the sequence of events:

(1) There is a runner at 1st.
(2) Batter bunts the ball down the first base line. 1B charges, 2B goes to cover first. It is an excellent bunt, and rolls down the 1B line. The batter has some wheels.
(3) Catcher fields the ball about 30 feet from 1B and throws a bullet.
(4) The batter-runner, 2B covering first and the ball arrive at the white bag (there is a double bag) at the same time.
(5) 2B (covering first) takes her eye off the ball, and it hits her (*not* the batter runner) in the shoulder. Ball rolls into the outfield.
(6) Umpire calls batter-runner out.

The only legitimate rule to call the BR out would be interference though I don't see anything that you have offered to indicate such.

Very similar thing happened to our team today leading to a 20 minute delay while coaches, umpires, and UIC "discussed."
Runner at 2nd. Batter bunted to pitcher. Pitcher threw to 1st hitting batter-runner in the back of the hemet as she touched the bag.
Runner at 2nd scored.

Batter-runner called out for interference. Runner returned to second. Was this the correct call?
