We have 2 conference schools that are over an hour away. We have to be released early for those games. We have traffic issues with a couple of others. Typically, we do our best to get out of our parking lot before students are released. Otherwise, we might be there 20 minutes or more. So, we get out 10-15 minutes early and students are to be ready to run for that bus.

If 2 -4 hours a week is an issue in HS, you might as well cross College Softball off the to-do list. Better learn to prioritize and manage your time now.

Amen !!!!
A day in the life of a student athlete is not for everyone. If missing school hours is an issue for your DD and her success, then she definitely wants to rethink playing at the next level.

Jake left SC for Cali early last Thursday. Played Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Got home late Monday. Tuesday - class/practice. Wednesday - class/game vs VT. Thursday - class/practice. Friday - travel to Knoxville/Game and start of SEC conference play when it starts to get crazy. Check out of life, until late May will only be time for Softball, School, Sleep and nothing else. :)

Momo's Dad, I thought you lived in Ca.. Don't the schools out there let students out of school to go riot "I mean go protest " the new administration in the White House, so I would think getting out for softball would be better.

In DD's school their last period (for varsity players) is spring sports class. So that really cuts down on classes missed. The exception are the out of town games - we are playing a double header in a town 2.5 hours away and then a 4 game round robin 7 hours away - that will mean some missed classes.

All of our games are within a 1 hour drive. Our players will typically miss their last period for the farther ones. Probably 5 or 6 times throughout the season. When you are looking at a 20 game season, including 10 home games, the early dismissals really are a small percentage. DD has missed more cumulative time with college visits this year than she will due to softball.

I guess it depends on the schools and time. In PA we missed the last 2 classes of the day (7 classes a day) for an away game and the last class for a home game. Typically 2 games a week (1 home and 1 away) Luckily a lot of the schools around here tend to know their athletes and make sure they have an extra last period (gym, art, music, etc.. so they aren't missing something like Science Lab). However the dismissals are at teachers digression if the student isn't performing well in their class they can deny the early dismissal.

We live in southeast Texas. Our high school players miss class for basketball, softball, baseball, tennis, track, and maybe powerlifting. They have tournaments during the day. For instance, this week there's a varsity baseball tournament, and the first game is at 10:00 am on a Thursday. It concerns me for the future because dd10 is nowhere near the academic that ds15 is, and he has had struggles with his studies during basketball season. However, most of the honors kids in our small district compete in multiple sports and other time-consuming activities (band, cheer, dance, ag, etc.), and they manage just fine.

One thing the "school" does right when it comes to softball is the last block or period for all players is generally scheduled as PE or Sports depending on their age level, which means from 1:45 to the end of the school day they are not really missing a class... There is the very rare out of town tournament that will require checking out around 12:00 but that is rare...

In our area it is only and issue for Varsity players. All JV games start at 415 and all fields are within 30 minutes (3p dismissal). Varsity plays three out of town double headers and one area tournament that runs during the day Thursday - Sun. Regionals are the last week of school and state for baseball and softball are the week after school ends.
