In tourney this weekend we're on defense. Runner on 1st with 1 out. Count on batter is 1-1. Batter foul tips straight into catchers glove. Runner on 1st steals 2nd. Why would you be penalized for catching the tip? Makes no sense. I should instruct my catcher to intentionally drop it except on 3rd strike? This rule seems silly to me.

I guess it's about consistancy. You get penalized(slightly) in that situation because a foul tip that goes directly to the catchers glove and is caught is considered a strike, but on the third strike you get the benefit of the rule. If your catcher can't throw out a runner on a ball she catches cleanly (foul tip or not) I don't see how this is much of a penalty.

Not sure how you consider it silly. It is considered a playable ball and you not only get the strike but you also get the attempt to put the stealing runner out. How is it any different than a caught swing and miss, your catcher has the same ability to throw out the stealing runner.

Ok. I see what you mean. In 10u its a penalty since the runner stealing 2nd is safe most of the time.
