In my opinion you would learn how the ball moved in terms of where you would expect the ball to be. If you don't start out with some sort of frame of reference (that I feel like that drill could teach) how do you teach them where to 'guess'? Say a screwball would start at a certain point (where the first ball is placed) and ended up inside on the hands (where you would place the ball on the tee to hit. Do you think that wold give the hitter at least a better opportunity when guessing?

In this drill you see the ball at 20 feet or so out in front of you and then 'jump' to where it is on the tee, isn't that the same thing? Maybe when the batter is focused on the ball out in front someone can move the tee to a different spot to better simulate your idea so the 'guess' is more realistic?

Are there any other drills that can better prepare batters for this situation without live pitching?
