DD was playing TB this summer for 16U team, 1st inning 2nd play, starting SS is injured when she twists her knee running across 1B. B/U middle infielder already out with a broken toe. DD moved from OF to SS where she played the rest of the game. Did fine, no errors, several good plays made against a hard hitting team. She played SS in HS ball when not pitching so she had the most experience at the position. At 2nd year 14U she played 3B and OF when not pitching. 12U and 1st year 14U she mostly played at the catching position. It is nice to hear someone say they think there is a place for LH catchers too. Sadly, DD bats RH:(

Lefty catchers have as many advantages as disadvantages. On the other positions, it's tough for a lefty, but a lot depends on the level. You probably won't see a lot of 18U Gold teams with a left handed SS, but in Rec and lower age groups if you can play you can play. It doesn't really matter if your coach is really watching what is going on. We played a team with a LH girl on 2nd. She absolutely killed us in the field. Will she go to college at 2nd, likely not, but she was the best one we've seen all year at 2nd.
