And had this been the "Coaching Softball" forum, that would probably be an appropriate response. But this is the "Softball Rules Questions" forum, and the response is a out-of-place. It would be akin to someone asking a question about dropped-3rd-strike and someone responding with "coach your player to not strike out." Doesn't really help.

That said, this is DFP. Things sometimes take a detour.

It resets every time the runner reverses direction, has nothing to do with the ball being thrown.

I'd take it one step further and say every time the runner reverses direction AND a fielder with the ball is attempting a tag.

Perhaps not in this case but many times questions in this forum are parents and or coaches looking for umps to blame for their team's mistakes. I responded to that mistaken perception.
