Ball fielded in the infield say, play at first, BR touches only white portion of double base. The rules say the BR is out on appeal if the appeal is made before the BR returns to the base. So what is exactly required here for an out? If the first baseman simply touches the base before BR touches a second time, is BR out, or does the defensive team have to do something else?

Defense has to make it clear they are appealing. Touch the base and say she missed base or something of the sort.

Batter-runner is not required to touch the safety bag in quite a few circumstances. Easiest one is a shot to the fence were she is going for 2.

That's why I used infield play. However it naturally begs the question of the line drive shot to RF playing in. But as per the rules even in that situation the BR can use white.

Foul territory defense at 1B can use either right?

Thanks Comp. That's a good one to tell your first basemen.

No the umpire cannot just call the runner out, must be appealed before the runner returns to the base.

Wouldn't it be any time a runner is turning to go towards 2B, even if it's only a "turn and look"?
