My oldest DD has always been a reliable, contact hitter in game. Lays beautiful bunts (but is slow running, so sac bunts) and is consistent when hitting away. Good contact, but hits mostly singles partially due to slow running again. Anyway, she is HORRIBLE in the cage with a machine. I mean, all over the place. I think at this point is a lot mental, because she will tell me that is horrible at hitting off machines and doesn't like it. She says the fact of not having a pitcher to watch the motion messes her up with timing.

Any ideas? I know for a fact that the school team HC said they use the pitching machine a lot during practice and I don't want it held against her for being a weak batter on the machine. I am sure after a few games, he would see the difference.

Bunt twice, swing once. Bunt twice, swing once. Repeat...

It'll really help with getting the timing down. A couple sessions like that should increase the confidence, and in turn, increase effectiveness.

Good luck!

Here is an idea and I have seen this help personally.

Help your daughter understand the path the bat needs to take to contact by backwards chaining.

1. Start with bat and body in idea point of contact position.
2. Slowly work bat and body backwards along ideal path to a good launch position
3. minimize leg lift and other long timing mechanisms, just lift the front heal at the launch position.
4. Retrace the move several times in slo-mo from launch to contact and back again the final time in the launch position
5. Stick a ball in that machine and...BOOM!

DD hit off machine for first time in a while today. She doesn't like hitting off a machine, and isn't particularly good at it. But so much of all that is confidence. So I put it on a low speed. Started w/ her bunting about 50. Then swinging away, and she hit well. Never sped up the machine to make it harder. Get her to like it, get her to feel confident w/ it, don't rush it, go from there.

All great suggestions. Now I just have to wait for her to get better from this nagging injury she has before we start working on it. Something going on with her ribs, orthopedic doc's are running all kind of test cause they cant seem to figure it out as of yet. Frustrating to say the least.

My DD hates the machine too. She can slap off it fine, but hitting away is a whole other story. She gets so frustrated and down on herself. Her hitting coach says he likes to see the girls hit off a machine because he can focus on their swings differently. He only uses the machine in the off season...so right now. She hates going to hitting lessons when she knows she is facing the machine...but we keep going.

I know a lot of players who can't hit the machine. I wouldn't lose one bit of sleep over it. I am working with one young lady now who can't do so and gets so frustrated when practicing with her TB Team. Yet, she rakes in the summer. So, tell your dd she is in the same boat as a lot of very good players and being able to time the live stuff is much more important.
