Is it broken?

Back on the dirt...
We have a player that has a Ghost that looks like the one with the thin circular line but it also has some carbon fiber webbing cracks in it too. She has been using it for 2 months and it has not become any worse surprisingly.

We warrantied a Ghost with a crack that didn't appear very deep or look like much, but the change in sound was significant. There was visible damage but the other dads I showed it to were divided on whether it was a paint crack or a real problem. But the sound it made during a game at bat is why I checked it in the first place. During the last at bat she took with it, it sounded really strange. It sounded soft or loose -- more like hitting with a wet paper towel roll, though there was never any rattle. Easton was good about the replacement.

Usually a "crack" like that and the bat is getting super hot. When they shark tooth...they are done.

The visible damage was near the end of the bat, so it probably wasn't a good swing that broke it. (Though it might have been a decent swing on a very good pitch, right? :)) We certainly mis-hit our share of balls, but this sounded different than the dead sound I associate with a hit off the handle or even the end of the barrel. She had over 300 at bats that season, and it was the only time I ever heard a sound that made me want to go check on her bat. And when we checked it, there was visible damage. Just didn't appear very deep.

I have seen a few cracks on Ghosts. Usually they are at an angle, not 90 degrees across the bat. Looks like a paint crack/scratch to me too. In all seriousness, dd’s was worse than that at USA nationals, it got sticker at compression testing and not a second look by an umpire all week long. DD used another one with a big ol’ nasty shark tooth crack for last few weeks of hs season too. I don’t know how that passed inspection. Also it seemed to be quite good in that condition. You never know when you are going to get Mr. Umpire The Human Microscope so maybe we have been lucky.

As far as the sound, seems like dd’s sounded more than a crunch than a crack when it was good but close to end of life.

BT3100, that one is just starting to get good, don’t send that back yet!

That looks just like some scratches on my DD’s Ghost. Almost in the same exact place, too. I know it’s scratches on hers, though and not cracks of any kind. There are also scratches lengthwise on the bat, but only in that spot right around the “E” logo. That’s the point on the bat where the barrel starts to taper down and comes into contact with other surfaces more than anywhere else. We also have a pvc pipe inside the bag to protect the bat from being crushed, and it rubs on that spot a lot.
