Cleaning out the garage and I found a couple buckets of softballs that haven't been used in a few years. They seemed a little harder than usual, so I was wondering if, after a few years of sitting in a bucket, can they become sort of petrified?

Send them over to me (I'll pay for shipping) and I'll let you know..:p

In all seriousness I am sure something changes but for BP they should be fine. Heck, we found a bucket of baseballs from when I played (20+ years) ago in my parent's garage this summer
and they were fine for BP with my DD  She also enjoyed hitting with my little brother's huge barreled baseball bat circa 2000

I don't think so. DD hits some we found a garage sale. She love hitting the old red dots. Not much fun picking the ump after she hits a bucket as the just fly.

I had one that was squeaky clean. Always dressed to the 'nines' with neat and tight seams. Looked right out of the wrapper! Went to school, did homework and did all the correct extracurricular activities. But then started hanging out with the wrong crowd. Got tossed around by bad players in her life. Ended up torn, tattered, dirty, and just falling apart (at the seams). Ended up used and abused, face down in the batting practice bucket. So, yeah, they do go bad.

So Cal
Ive seen some get soggy and mushy (Im going to regret making that comment right after the urologist one) so I would think it depends on how they were stored and humidity... for batting practice I wouldnt care but I wouldnt use them for fielding or pitching...

Gotta love auto-correct. Nice job of it getting the context right (ump)!
