I seriously doubt that they would have a shot a Mendoza today. She would probably end up at a very good PAC 12 or SEC school. Yes, she is one person who played there back in the days of 40 feet, a white ball, when the current crop of college players were starting to read and write. Point is that it is a research school. It is definitely not known for churning out athletes. Maybe Allister will change that.
They do ok in football as well, a much harder sport to fill a roster full quality players, and women's basketball. In general I agree that schools with high academic standards have a more difficult time filling a roster with good players. However it is not impossible and just requires the right coach and a few good recruits to get the ball rolling. Getting a degree from Stanford can open a lot of doors...
