While we focus on the bigger tournament, it is worth highlighting the first year that a second level D1 tournament has been put in place (via TCS, NFCA and NCAA).

This is a critical development for college softball - more teams in post-season - more chances to play - and more opportunities which are needed to help all of D1 develop to a point where having every SEC team in the post-season can no longer be a discussion.

Worth checking out some very good teams on the outside looking in. Some teams who have NEVER played post season softball and so on....

When I was a young lad in college my girlfriend played for Sam Houston State. I remember her telling me that they won an NIT National tournament and even beat Notre Dame. This was 1993. I just looked in the archives and yes it says they got 1st place at the NIT Nationals. I wonder what happened to that tourney and why it's taken such a long time to have a rebirth?

They have 48 spots and got 26 teams for their inaugural tourney - not great, but not bad either considering nobody had money budgeted for it.

Looks like Mich. St is the only P5 team in it. They lost 6-7 to Murray St yesterday and are now playing IUPUI.

So from reading the comment section on the article the field of teams could be as large as 48, but only 26 accepted. It sounds like several schools declined due to the cost. Hopefully it gains a little steam and grows each year.
