Throwing hand placement

I guess to a certain degree it depends on how disciplined the catcher is at keeping their hand by or behind the leg. My DD didn't catch last spring/summer and is catching about 1/3rd of the innings this spring/summer. She's been to Jay's catching camps 3 times. Now that she has gotten back into the rhythm of catching, she uses the hand behind glove/bring hand to the chest method for runners on.

The C1 on her team last spring/summer at times was flailing her hand around so much after starting with hand behind the leg, that at times I couldn't watch.

What is the theory behind having your throwing hand against your chest or behind your glove? Is it something I should adopt when I am behind the plate? Personally, I'm not comfortable with having my throwing hand where chances of injuring my hand is higher. But that's just me.

You should do whatever you have to to get your hands on the NECC Catching video, I believe you would benefit greatly. The theory is explained fully along with a LOT of other excellent catching skills and mechanics.

7 years later, I still say the best $40 I spent on softball was the NECC DVD. Their throwing information has evolved over the years, but if you buy their streaming version, you have newer throwing information than the original DVD. https://vimeo.com/ondemand/neccdvd/

There used to be a youtube video of Jay demonstrating runners on and no one on base, but I can't find it anymore.

This video shows how the hand is protected on a block. Not sure how you can safely get the hand from by the leg to blocking position.

I thought that's what it meant. Thank you for sharing. Pretty slow runners trying to steal. Coach missed the throw down between innings? Like the throw to third too! In front or behind and over.

The idea is that the hand stays in the "shadow" of the mitt when receiving in a runner's-on position.

I want catchers to have a full bag of tools to work with on their throws to bases. In front of the batter, behind the batter, from your feet, or from your knees. Whatever the game gives you, be prepared to handle it. Sometimes you may need to improvise.
