Love these stories. When I coach I do the very same thing - kid makes a good play or does something special I acknowledge it every time regardless of what jersey she is wearing. Most smile sheepishly.

One time I had an opposing coach tell me to never speak to her players after I gave a 3B a fistbump for diving and catching a screaming line drive (10u). I was rather put off by it. But since it came from a 23 year old former “star” coaching one of the “special” club teams I shrugged it off and went over board praising them. Oh...and we were a big underdog and beat them out in elimination play. Karma? Heehee

Years ago I was coaching a 10U team. We'd been trying to teach our kids how to sell a fake throw. We were on offense and I had a girl on 3rd. Grounder hit to 3rd. The girl picked up the ball and executed a really good fake throw to 1st. My player bit on it real hard and ran right into the 3rd baseman for the out.

I yelled out to the girl playing 3rd thanking her for showing my team how to do a fake throw perfectly. Then I told my player she better go back out on the field and find her shoelaces. That girl faked her out of them. All the kids had a good laugh.
