Shawn, it's what happens when the COM doesn't get shifted (FYB). Swing is the shift is long and slow.
He will always get tied up (up/in).
Go back and listen to AJ's comments during the video.
It's why AJ had to make the changes. If you're not shifting (anticipating) your COM to get leverage your beat. Impossible to turn on a ball (inside/out only).
Swing is the shift is slow and long. Shifting the COM before launch is where its at while maintaining the rear leg hip relationship.
This is what happens if waiting for the shift to occur during the swing (You get stuck).
Lots of bad drills out there !! This promotes rotating the lower half vs allowing the legs to be used for leverage.
Compare to getting into a strong leveraged position.

The barrel is above the hands in relation to the spine. ( posture ). Arod, and others who demo it are doing it without proper posture. Add in the posture and it all comes together..
Barry, and all the greats swung "down to" and yes inside pitches are more out front than others. Its why the contact rate was much better and 1/10th of the strikeouts. The vertical swings would probably whiff playing pepper as well. Pitch determines the plane and barrel path.
No its forced because every swing is within the vertical plane.. Like Bonds said "anyone can hit the low pitch" Every pitch down in the zone will be more vertical. The key is to be adjustable for all pitches.
Bonds not forcing a barrel path.
He's forcing a barrel path (not adjustable). The best hitters are able to go with it or turn on it depending on what the pitch calls for.
Similar to this kids forced vertical barrel path.
