We had a onfield practice yesterday with the D3 team, focusing on D. I saw trailing runners unaccounted for, bad throws because they hurried when they didn't need to, OF not backing throws (this is my area and it was handled with just a few questions), unforced errors, you get the picture, eh? My point is that D errors and misplays result in big innings and teams beating themselves. Personally, in my past coaching days, I would stop practices as many times as needed and explain the correct way of playing a situation and WHY it needs to be done that way. I also chattered the whole game on reminding players about situations for our D. So I repeat, as long as you work on getting more informed about the nuts and bolts of D, the better you can teach it. The overarching goal is to keep runners of the bases and when they do get on, keep them from advancing to home. Teach your D when to throw it to where and why.

The frustrating part is, they DO know where and when. I think so much of this is just nerves. Starting the season, we had two freshmen in the infield, and basically three kids who are either in their first year playing or first year starting. For the most part, the skills and knowledge are there for all of them. But man, the nerves. You can see it in their body language. Plays they make 90% of the time or better in practice, just fall apart. And I'm talking about EASY stuff. And as you know, once that snowball starts it's incredibly difficult for them to settle back down. I think it even affects the hitting. And then at times, they've been brilliant. Error free, or only 1 or 2 errors. And of course, they always hit better when the D is on point. And vice versa.

There's just so much of the mental game happening. And a lot of that can be helped with more reps, but you can't force kids to show up in the offseason. We're on the field or cage twice a week, starting a week or two after the season ends. But half of them don't show up until day 1, which is 4 weeks before games start.

Spring break and a few rainouts, and the kids haven't played for quite a while. Expecting rainouts Thursday and Friday.

For DD at least, it's for the best. She got a bad scrape near her ankle a few games back sliding into home, then it rubbed the next night when she pitched and it opened up badly. She didnt say much about it, then I look and actually see how bad it was, plus it's infected. She's on antibiotics now and it's healing, but it's not in any big hurry to do so. Even if the games happen, I don't think she's gonna be able to play until next week. It's pretty nasty.

The grind continues. The defense has finally settled-in and is playing halfway decently when the lineup is consistent. DD's ankle took a turn for the worse, along with an allergic reaction and low white blood cell count we believe was caused by a strong antibiotic. She missed a few games, but has been back and pitched a few games. She seems to be getting more and more accurate, which is great, but teams are really teeing off on her at times. Her job is to get contact and minimize walks, and she's doing it very well. I've been very impressed at her composure. She knows what her job is, but I don't think most girls would keep it together very well giving up 15 hits.

Our hitting still leaves a lot to be desired. The ones who usually hit well aren't hitting very well and the ones who usually can't hit are sitting there with the highest averages. It's all upside down. Last season we won almost every game that we knew we could compete. This season because of some defensive woes and the fact that one pitcher or the other always seems to be sick or injured, we're losing some of the games we would normally consider a gimme. It's been frustrating, but they've continued to fight and are winning just often enough to keep spirits high.

Currently sitting at 8-12, with 9 regular season games remaining plus districts and regionals.

Funny how that goes, got the same thing here. One of our best hitters slumping bad for a few games, then wakes up one game and hits for the cycle.

It's crazy. There's one girl in particular who literally went 6 for 67 last year with 36 strikeouts, showed up to like two offseason practices, and now is sitting at .421. Shes gotten really good at taking an early, slow swing and letting that $550 barrel bloop it into the shallow grass.

A couple of our higher average kids have done a lot of bunting, which has been pretty lucrative for us so far. We arent getting away with it much with really good coverage teams but we have a lot of speed, so mid to lower level teams aren't able to do a lot if they can lay one down.

My kid is at about .280 or so I think. Stats show her lower, but I know of two games recently where the stats weren't correct. I would never be even this particular about it, but after all those lessons she had a goal to hit .300. All that time off from the leg injury and rain has kinda messed her up.

I really appreciate how much work you put into your team. You're the kind of coach I wish my daughter had instead of her current HS coach.

Well thanks, and thanks for reading! I'm not an official coach on this team, but I help work with them all summer and I try to help with some pitching instruction when needed. That's what I'd really like to continue doing as the years ago by. Although I've learned a ton about pitching, trying to figure out how to teach it has been a challenge. If she decides to play next year I'm gonna take my kid to a more experienced coach in the offseason and see what both of us can learn from him.

I really enjoy coaching overall though, and if you'd told 15-year-old me at the end of my mediocre baseball career that one day I would be coaching girls in softball, I'd have never believed it. It's funny, the things we do to help our kids. I wish during my baseball years that I'd had coaches who put as much effort into teaching as some of the guys and gals I've worked with do. I could have been a much, much better player.
