I coach a 12u team and want to work on sliding. I worked on it a bit last year and had the girls slide on cardboard. It worked ok but many of the girls were still pretty apprehensive and one girl ended up flopping down on her butt a little too hard and bruised something. I felt horrible about...
Thank you for the reply but that’s not really what I’m asking. I’m not talking about girls slowing down as they approach the base. I’m talking about girls not truly hitting top speed at any point. Wondering if anyone has invested time on this and if so, how.
Do you do any drills or spend any time on teaching your girls to run *faster*?
DD was stealing 2nd yesterday. The catcher was pretty decent and almost threw her out. If you asked her if she was running at top speed I bet she’d say yes. But I’d describe it as a fast jog. Like, 85% of top speed...
I appreciate all the strong opinions and I’ve loved reading the responses, and I will continue to read.
For a moment, think of softball as a product. There are lots of competing products these girls can choose from (soccer, volleyball, swim, martial arts, etc). I’ve heard complaints from my...
I coach a 10u rec team. In the next few months we'll revisit rules for the 2018 season. Historically we do a "modified coach pitch" which means pitchers cannot walk batters. If the pitcher throws four balls before the batter strikes out or puts the ball in play, then the coach comes in (count...
I coach a 10u rec team. Actually through a series of events we are playing in a 12u league which is new for all of my girls. It's fall ball so the pitching we've faced is all over the board but some of the opposing pitchers are pretty good. Last week I was chatting with the opposing coach before...
I coach a 10u rec team. It's fall ball and it just started so most of these girls don't know each other, which is a factor. Beyond some team bonding exercises, any thoughts on how to increase communication and general (constructive) chatter on the field?
I'm pretty vocal and I'll "quiz" the...
Ok thank you everyone - and yes I'm very wary of creating a dangerous situation. I don't play to win at all costs and I wouldn't allow my girls to slam into anyone who dares step in their way. But our games have one umpire: behind home plate. Often they just can't tell how far outside the...
Is the consensus then, with the exception of avoiding a tag, to alter the basepath as-needed to avoid contact with defensemen, regardless of whether or not they're fielding a batted ball? I have to admit i'm kind of surprised. I imagine this isn't how it would be taught at the higher levels of...
Thanks but don't get too hung up on the example. Nearly every game a different version of this comes up. Even in the above example it wasn't the RF she was trying to avoid. It was the SS, 2b and Pitcher who were all clustered in the base path. Other times it's a 3b or SS casually watching a ball...
When you're teaching the kids about obstruction (as it relates to them as a baserunner) - what do you teach and how do you teach it?
I coach a 10u rec team. Last game I had a girl on 1b, two outs, and the batter hit a pop fly that drew the pitcher, SS, second baseman, and right fielder into my...
I'm also a first year 10U fastpitch coach who did not grow up playing baseball. Our season started in early March. We're in Seattle so I imagine we've had similar weather to you, which is to say horrible.
I'll offer a couple pieces of advice that worked for me and helped with my confidence as a...
