Still Photography - Gear, Settings, Tips & Tricks

Im a Nikon guy too (D7000+f2.8 70-200), so, cant help with Canon specific stuff. Youve got good gear. Agree with Marriad about the monopod, but, I find I only really use it for night/low light games. If its bright enough, I tend to shoot more around f8 and keep my speed faster than 1/1000s...

Distance you travel to your travel team.

Right across the road, literally. Ironically, when we bought our place, DD was 3, and while shed been a regular at my slo-pitch games and my wife was a rep player herself, ball was not on our radar & we actually had no idea there was a ball park there, or a fastpitch club. My DDs team had a...

    Broken Bat Pics

Trying again, hopefully with actual bat pictures this time. Ooops. Ha! A thread i can get behind. I take some solace in the misery of others who have had the bat blues too. Sorry. First one, not actually my daughters. Team mates. But, was rather spectacular so am showing it off anyway...

Seeking a practice bat for DD

Nah, she's not doing anything that crazy when it comes to practising. Not really sure what to say. I think, in general, we're doing things right in terms of having her using a non-game bat for practice & being careful about not using the good bats when its too cold. Im going to go with the...

Look What We did to our Rip-It Mask!

I have a question. I thought this idea has some potential & stopped in at a retailer last night to look at one of these sun visors in person. Different brand though. I noticed that theyre not designed for direct vision, but rather to shield the eyes. I noticed that when i looked through it...

Seeking a practice bat for DD

Thanks guys she's been swinging a 30. She spent an hour with her hitting coach last night exploring bat lengths & drops & it looks like, based on where she is right now, she can either go up to a 30-10 or can go to a 31 but needs to stay on the lighter side, which, I think we'd rather avoid...

Seeking a practice bat for DD

Thanks We're going to explore trying to move her to a drop 10 with her hitting coach as soon as a CF8-10 is available locally. Which means, given my complete lack of faith in any Demarini's survivability, i'll still be on the hunt for a similar bat for practices. My original question was...

Seeking a practice bat for DD

My 12 year old seems to have quite a knack for breaking bats. As of yesterday, in two seasons she's fractured too many bats. Including, CF5, CF6, CF7, CF8 and separated the barrel from the handle on her Legit practice bat. The first time, when the glorious CF5 made the sick sound, I was elated...

    Mother's Day

No debate for us - one of the biggest tournaments in our neck of the woods is on Mother's Day; it was one of three that we identified in September as being "must dos" for the coming season. Of course it helps being a couple hours away in another country, the moms get to have Mothers Day on...

Male coaches what kind of shorts do you wear in games?

I wear appropriately coloured cargo shorts; which also happen to be my normal non-work attire; year round (fortunately, despite being Canadian, we live in the Pacific Northwest - winter isn't exactly harsh here, really wet yes, but we dont get many days below freezing). Yes, you could try to...

    Composite Bats for U12

I chuckled. U12 might not be a soccer team you know. The OP might be living up here in the great white North where we use the U before the age (ie Under 12 - as opposed to 12U = 12 and Under). My DD has a 2012 Synge and used the living daylights out of it last year / early this year between...

    OT: DSLR for fastpitch

Hmm... As silly as he looks, he might be on to something there, I'll bet that's a video panhead on that tripod. Low angle shots are the way to go for shooting action, especially the smaller kids in my experience - and, I know i've struggled shooting with a monopod from my knees / from my stool...

    OT: DSLR for fastpitch

Nikon D7000, Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8 VR & a 1.4x teleconverter. It's APS-C, i'd really love to be able to get a fast full framer, but, the budget will not allow it at the moment. I use an 18-200 zoom for "general" stuff. Nowhere near as good optically as the big lens, but, its FAR more versatile...

    How fast?

Thanks, that helps me understand the times a bit better. 60 @ 8U. Crazy long. How do any of the kids get on base? That much distance would allow at least one if not two errors and still leave the infield enough time to get the ball to first before the runner... (wouldnt it?) Last season our...

    How fast?

What's the baseline length for 10U? I'm trying to relate the speeds to what I know for U10 here - we use 45' (for U6 - U10); I suspect you guys use 55' probably? The times would make more sense (to me at least)
