MLB umps average about 94% correct on balls/strikes. Wouldn't really say frequently.
MLB umps average about 94% correct on balls/strikes. Wouldn't really say frequently. Hitters average about 25% hits... Sidenote: Home plate ump in the Angels vs Tigers game yesterday saw 122 taken pitches. Made the correct call on 121 of them. One strike right at the lower corner he called a ball.

In general, we all need to learn to deal with whatever the umps strike zone is for a given game. If balls in the players eyes are strikes that day, the batters better start tomahawking them the best they can. Or, strike out looking, and then complain about the umps.
MLB umpires get about 1/5 called balls and strikes wrong. That’s very frequent:

I love the notion that a missed borderline strike/ball (which often is actually in the “buffer zone” for MLB’s scoring system) has the magnitude of something like the missed call that cost a perfect game a few years ago or the ‘85 World Series call … let alone something that really matters in the world.

For what it is worth, I like the ball/strike challenge system being tested in the minors. (I forget if it is AA or AAA.)

I'm at a loss here of what to tell the girl. This is 3rd/4th grade travel, the girl in question might not even be pushing 4 feet, but almost every umpire pretty much calls the strike zone basically as he sees it, which means pitches that he's looking down at are still over her head, and she's getting frustrated. (This happens to a few of the other shorter girls too, but she's the shortest)

I've though about moving her back, hoping at least pitches with some arc come down into her zone at least, but then she won't be able to hit the ones that barely clear the plate.
I've thought about moving her up, in the hopes that it'll look even more glaringly over her head, but i don't think that'll matter.

Is there anything we can do? Or is it just a matter of staying positive and hoping you get a pitch, and hope next year both the pitching and umpiring are a little better (plus some growth?)
Get with the Umpires and explain your concerns. Those player's age and height make it tough to get low enough to call a knees to letters zone. Also, at that age and skill level, the pitchers are usually not able to hit a strike zone. Sounds cruel, but both coaches and umpire need to have some conversation before the game.

I mean even the "best" umpires at the major league level are frequently wrong and high susceptible to situation and framing, it's not something that's every going to be resolved at these lower levels. Doesn't make it less frustrating or easy to adjust to.
Wrong. MLB umpires are right more often than the computer strike zone called on TV. The computer assumes the same ratio from the knees to the top of the strike zone. And for the computers to come close the computers need an extra day to even get close to them. (Excluding Angel Hernandez.)

If it is rec ball and your biggest concern is the strike zone then you're coaching for the wrong outcome. And if the umpiring is so bad step away from coaching and help out by umpiring.

That's an impressive umpiring eye!

Like that word tomahawking!
The computer strike zone is not as reliable as a human umpire. The computer umpire assumes the same ratio from the top of the zone to the top of the knees, which is an incorrect assumption, which means what the computer zone is incorrect for certain batters. Most umpires are correct at over 98% most of the time. There have been studies that prove this. And there is a computer used to rank umpires and this data is not available until 24 hours after the game is finished. And the funny thing is the umpires union has fought to have this released.

Btwwho is the person behind pushing for robo umpires? The same person who was against releasing the data used to grade umpires and the guy who hates the umpires union. Your current commissioner, Rob Manfred.

To get further into the weeds and build of @Gtrips07 's comments ...

The computer grading system used for umpires is NOT the same one used on TV. It is a far more accurate system than is used for "commercial" purposes. The "boxes" used for broadcast won't even match from the home team's broadcast to the visiting team's broadcast.

The move from Trackman to Hawk-Eye was a major improvement. Hawk-Eye still makes a better tool in a challenge system than a full ABS deployment though.

The difference between younger umpires and newer umpires is commonly NOT attributed to an "age thing." Younger umpires are being brought and trained with systems like the Laser Plate which are honing their skills in ways the veterans never had an opportunity to do.
