Catcher 1 - Great receiving, but has an arm injury, and can't throw to any base.
Catcher 2 - Spotty receiving, with multiple passed balls per game, but has a strong arm.

Which one do you put behind the plate?

The one who can hit bombs....

Seriously, all things equal. Catcher 1::: Seriously, all things equal. Catcher 1... editted - missed the injury part.... If she is actually injured she doesn't play at all and I don't care what happens in the game.

Catcher 1 might not be able to stop the runners getting to third, but at least they are not giving them home base for free.
Catcher 2 is giving them free runs. I don't even have to steal on her.. I just wait until we can job to the next base.

Eric...tell you DD to rest, it stinks but a couple weeks while it might hurt the team in the short term in the long run for the team and her it will be best. You said just a couple pass ball per game not per innings this isn't 10/12U so catcher 2.

Of course you want the catcher who receives the ball better and has fewer passed balls. BUT if she is hurt I wouldn't want her back there. Just speaking from my experience - my DD can be told a thousand times not to do something when recovering from an injury, but put in a game situation instinct takes over and she does it anyway - regardless of what that means for her recovery.

This is a small hiccup in the softball journey. DD has been out a few times and it has been HARD for her to sit on the sidelines and watch - but ultimately she is in a better place, mentally and physically when she gets to play again.

I will take catcher 2

Every time a runner gets on it turns into a triple with catcher 1. Plus she should not be playing catcher at all if she can't throw.

This was our experience, and what inspired the thread...

Catcher 2 started the first 2 games of the season. Her passed balls (sometimes more than 1 per inning) brought multiple runs across the plate, and gave up many free bases. She also dropped (what should have been) an easy catch on a force play at home.

Catcher 1 started game 3, which was a re-match of game 1. Catcher 1 (strained rotator cuff) was able to throw easy back to P with no pain and no issues, and did not throw down at the start of the inning. I'm not so sure the other team ever really knew that she wasn't going to throw to a base.

The difference in the games was vivid. Game 1 was an out-of-control disaster resulting in a fairly heavy loss. Game 3, from the start, was controlled, consistent, and resulted in a solid win. In game 3, 1 runner advanced 1 base on a pitch in the dirt that C didn't pick cleanly.

This thread was about making a point...

Receiving is the #1 job of a catcher. If they can't do it reliably, everything else is irrelevant. Nothing is more important on defense than controlling the ball.

Think it matters if the other team knows catcher 1 can't throw. If they don't know use catcher 1 until they figure it out. She can fake it for while. Say runner takes off, she purposely lets it bounce out of her glove and just eats it and doesn't throw.

Control the ball to control the game!

"Playing" with an injury...
Imo
(Means being able to play despite the injury without limitations)
*is a choice people have to make...
But playing a person who is limited because of the injury is a bad choice.
(if its that bad, shouldnt be playing)

? why have a catcher on the roster who an injured catcher would be better than?
.....in itself is a bad choice!
Strong arm means they can throw, doesnt mean their a catcher!

^^^^this you could get away with it for a little while but if they found out I'm not a real fan of every base hit turning into a triple.
