Most often it's delusional parents

I'm the exact opposite, but maybe it's because I actually train my own DD and can actually identify faults in her game.

I think if a parent is delusional, it's mostly attributed to the fact that they have no idea what is good vs bad in regards to how their DD plays.

I must admit I came close to a “hissy quit” a month or so ago. There were several things that I had considered safety issues with the treatment of DD by the coach. Mostly not understanding or caring about properly warming up before pitching or just general arm care in general for pitchers. So a decision had been pretty much made to move on at the conclusion of the season. But in our last tournament before nationals DD was playing first base and a ball was hit hard to shallow center field. The girl in center had a big arm and fires to first for the out. The ball is a wild throw about 3 feet from reach with foot on the bag. So DD comes off the bag to make the catch and stop the play. The coach goes to jumping my DD for not being ready and to always be expecting the ball and that she had missed the opportunity at an easy out. This was not done in a soft tone but loud enough for the game to pause as he was yelling at her. Now if she does make a bad play I have never had a problem with a coach getting on to her but to get on to her for a mistake another player had me fit to be tied. I was so close to telling her to just pack her bag and let’s leave. Had she not came off the bag it would have been worse. It took all I had and reminding myself that we just had one more tournament left and we would be moving on. Sometimes it is just a build up of many factors that can lead to a blowup. And it is not always the parents that should shoulder all the blame.

Tournaments - especially the most important ones for that team - magnify playing time discrepancies. In must-win games, I expect that the coaches are going to put the team on the field that they feel gives the team the best chance at winning each game. In our experience (2 years of all-stars, and 5 years of TB), it's to be pretty much to be expected that the #1s at every position are going to be starting every must-win game, unless there is a compelling reason not to (for example, giving the catcher a rest so she can play better in the next game, or a second-best fielder with a way-better bat). Expecting the same playing time that you get in pool play, low-level tournaments, and friendlies is unrealistic.

my issue is the lack of communication . . . all season long they pretty much split time fairly equally, and no forewarning of this. at very least, if team wanted only as insurance policy, they should pay the premiums (ie travel costs), not me. do you ask your insurance agent to pay your premiums, because hey you really dont need the insurance unless you file a claim?

and that this clearly was not a matter of putting best field on team (DDs bat is indisputably better by a couple of orders of magnitude, and behind the plate she keeps more balls in front of her, quicker release, arm strength itself the other C is a little stronger). team was 3-0 with her behind the plate at this tournament. this was petty BS to please his core group from their superstar undefeated rec team of a year ago. god I really feel for the 7-12 kids that were on that roster.

commitment also goes both ways. when the coach offered a roster spot to a player, they are making a commitment to the player as well, to develop them. players cannot develop sitting the bench. the coach offered the player the spot, if the player is putting in the effort, and their attitude is good, coaches need to keep their commitment to them. if that offer was, well they can be on roster, but will not play sundays, that is one thing. but unless the coach clearly qualifies and offer, they made a commitment to that player. not saying they cannot be benched if their play suffers, or there are other issues, but you make it clear. you do not wait until everyone is at nationals to bench someone with no prior notice. cowardly
