Everyone has gotten so soft. It's also apparent that many of the people on this thread haven't played any sports at a highly competitive level. She was being a baby and he called her on it. It's over. Assault? Teeth on home plate? That's just chatroom talk. I baseball she would win the ear hole for life award

You dont have enough info to make this call. You dont know whats been said in the past. He may truly deserve a non hi 5. Who knows. But she sure as heck shouldnt be called out for not doing it. He knew exactly what he was doing. I dont know the scoop but i don know there is more to the story. This not just a girl who didnt hi 5 a coach.

So my opinion (for what it's worth) has changed after watching the various clips over and over. As much as I really really dislike Walton, I initially took the "he was going through a long line of high fives, expected a hand, didn't notice until it was too late that there was no hand, may not have even known who the player was in the line of faces, and kept his hand up and reached to contact something as he kept walking to the next player in line" view. Now, after many many many more viewings, I'm of the opinion that he gave a little more oomph to his shoulder tap than would otherwise be necessary if my original opinion was correct.

(that's a really awkwardly written paragraph but I don't feel like editing)

So, Tim's a dick...no surprise there. Definitely should be some kind of consequence - fine, suspension, dinner with the Fagans, whatever.

But the Fagan girl isn't exactly bathed in glory either. One of the great things about this game is the high five tradition. it's about sportsmanship. It's about fighting as hard as you can to win the game, and then win or lose acknowledging your opponent. You can hate their guts, but you still acknowledge the competition. Plain and simple IMO. On our team, our girls must remove helmets and sunglasses, keep heads high and look the other team in the eye win or lose.

But Walton is 40-something and Fagan is 20ish, so the adult in this equation needs to be the bigger person. (and for anyone who thinks that a 20 year old is an adult, you clearly don't have a 20 year old).

Maybe one of the most replied to threads this year along with the KB thread.

I felt it was important for me to do a little more research this morning regarding the "High 5". I was amazed to learn that the "High 5" tradition apparently is not quite as much of a tradition as I once thought. I guess the older I get the more things change.....

TMD- same. I saw all the posts online (elsewhere) about inappropriate touching, etc and then I had to watch the clip 6 times to even see where the touch occurred. I thought TW was getting railroaded by the Haters, but now after seeing it 100 times, I see it differently. she overreacted, but he instigated it.

this is great!

I don't really think there will be any consequence for him, and I understand the "tradition" of the high five line and competition and all that. She may very well be in the wrong initially (IMO she is not due to the past issues, but that doesnt matter really) but it is NOT up to an opposing coach to try and teach her a lesson. And after watching it numerous times, I am convinced that he shoved her on purpose.

“I apologize to Haley. I just wanted to congratulate Auburn on the win – it was a good series.

“My intent was to give a high-five to each opposing player as we do after every game. Apparently, her hand wasn’t up as I said ‘good game’ and I touched her shoulder. I should have paid closer attention and did not intend to upset her.

“I regret that this has taken attention away from the effort and sportsmanship both teams displayed all weekend.”
