Thought this clip might help....
I definitely see where her hips and hands are moving together, Is there a drill that is good for separating the hips and hands? Thanks for all of the great tips.
Not trying to hurt your feelings - I have taken swings all different ways and the only time I have come close to matching a swing like Ortiz (in terms of barrel path) has been when I have used my hands/wrists to get the barrel around right from the start....I have never said your swing advice wouldn't work - it obviously does....but it is not efficient nor adjustable....
Am I sure? No, I am positive. Are you sure?
Are you sure? Check out the angle between the bat and his shoulders until his elbow is pointing to the ground. Does it really look like he's using his hands from the start? Check out the angle of the front shoulder to the front elbow. Is it changing?

Here's my breakdown of the five pics of David Ortiz's swing (mainly upper body):
Pic 1: Hip rotation has already started, shoulder rotation about to begin.
Pic 2: Back elbow begins to drop, hands stay relatively still as shoulders and torso begin rotation, and bat retains shoulders-to-bat angle less than 90 degrees.
Pic 3: Back elbow pointing straight down at the ground, torso rotating around spine, front shoulder socket rotating, pulling front arm to a decreased upper front arm to lower front arm angle, and shoulders-to-bat angle still less than 90 degrees.
Pic 4: Top hand now able to push in conjuction with the pull all along the front side and rotation of the torso, getting the barrel on and through the plane of the ball.
Pic 5: Contact. Bottom hand is palm-up and not rolling yet.
Based on these five freeze frames in order, I do not see any throwing of the barrel right at the start.
Am I sure? No, I am positive.
You are trying to base your opinions on a 2 dimensional view of 3 dimensional movement....you can only see lines and angles without taking into account things you cannot see from this angle....you are using a world is flat POV....
In this clip his rear elbow has already dropped/slotted....how can your elbow slot without your hands moving the barrel in some way? I have already posted the exercise where you watch yourself in the mirror and can see from 2 different perspectives how much the bat actually moves....that, my friend is a 3 dimensional view....
Let's see.....we have height, we have width, and we lack depth, so I guess throwing the barrel from the start as you state he is doing is his hands being thrown from his body out towards the camera, because that is the dimension we lack. Yeah, keep telling yourself that......
The bat can stay static during the slotting of the elbow if the top hand is loose around the bat, but that is not happening here. There is turning, but no throwing...remember, you said he throws the barrel from the start and that is obviously not happening.
Like I said, you keep stating what you think is proper terminology of a swing and I'll keep stating what I think is proper terminology of a swing. BTW, your other post concerning the steps....they were not steps, they were pics with descriptions of the slices of the swing timeline.
I have an idea, post a timeline of a hitter throwing the barrel from the start. Let's see how that works out........
