SS and the throw down!

I don't see this happening. If the throw is so early that the runner hasn't started sliding, she is probably trying to get back to first. Most throw downs, the runner is sliding. If the throw is so bad that the runner can see its not catchable, the SS can see that too and step away from the bag.

We teach our catchers to throw to a spot - knee high, two feet towards first base. The SS plays defense first and always takes the throw on the move, with minimal setup at the front corner of the bag. If the throw is dead on target they let it travel and block the bag WITH the ball. If the throw is off target they make an athletic play in front of the baseline, swiping a tag if possible. Our catchers miss high right when they miss, with this technique the SS can catch that miss deep and get a tag on the body well before the runner hits the base. 18s with catchers around 2 seconds pop to pop.

Talking 18u and college, a 60 mph pitcher is 0.5 sec to the plate and a good catcher pops sub 2.0. So why are there so many stolen bases? There just aren't that many true sub 2.8 runners!

Someone in that Outfielders thread knows a full team of 2.6s though.
