One piece of advice that I would give is to not go overboard on uniforms. Find some good shirts and use standard pant colors initially. Order a few extra shirts and socks so you can use guest players if you need. Our old league started a team a few years back and it was very successful. DD left another team after her season and we brought in another TB player and we were pretty good. They had players begging to come play for the team from the league.

Ok. 1st tryouts are over. We had 12 girls come out, and 12-15 girls that wanted to come out, but were playing this weekend. We have scheduled them for 1 of 2 remaining tryouts. Out of the 12 girls we have made 5 offers (4 accepted, and 1 will let us know this week), we cut 4 girls and invited 3 back for another workout. Had to deal with identical twins that were different abilities. Made an offer to 1 (accepted) and asked the other to come back. Things are looking good so far. We have 2 tryouts still scheduled and will hopefully get 12+ girls at each.

Do you bring the girls who accepted back out to tryouts to get them some more work, or tell them to stay home?

Anyone who is committed to the team should be there for team workouts, including tryouts. (IMO, YMMV).

Good luck with the twins. I'm betting they will only come as a package deal.

I assumed it would be a package deal, but when I spoke with the Dad, I explained my selection process, and asked him how he handles moments like this. He understood, and said it would make “twin 2” more motivated. In the end I will probably ask “twin 2” to play as well.

Intellectually, I find it interesting that identical twins would have a significantly different set of skills. Does one practice more than the other???

My DD played with a girl who was part of a set of identical twins, and had older sisters who were identical twins (yes, 2 sets of twins...all girls!). The athletic differences between them was interesting. The girl on our team put in a lot of effort into softball, and progressed quickly from a mid-level player coming out of rec ball to a very competent TB player. She is now playing in one of the top 14U TB teams in our area. Her twin sister still plays rec ball. She just doesn't have the same level of determination to succeed at softball.

Yes, if they don't put in the same amount of work it makes sense that one would progress faster than the other. With that in mind, it interesting that whatever slight differences in environment the two girls have been subjected to growing resulted in different interests. Or it could perhaps be the desire to be seen as different in the eyes of the their parents drove one to choose a different set of interests. Who knows...
