FWIW, DD went to a nationally recognized combine where the organizers had a "high end" gun and the resume' to use it. However, their readings were about 3-4mph faster than DD normally throws. Just goes to show that certain equipment and a resume' don't always equate to accuracy.
Not saying the OP's DD isn't really throwing that fast, but accurate speed readings are dependent upon so many things. Think ESPN radar guns during the WCWS.
Pitching speeds are like a black art. They vary so much that I now believe the only real way to talk speed is on a comparison basis instead of an outright absolute top speed. Compare pitchers on the same day, using the same equipment, and the same person. Top speed irrelevant, but the comparison of speeds between pitchers could be useful.
FWIW the difference between the release/top speed and the final/low speed readings is a great indication of pitching ability.
Assuming you mean the pitch is the fastest at release and the slowest at the catcher's mit (or bat if hit), because the pitch will slow down as it travels.
How is that a great indication of pitching ability? The less the drop them better the ability?
No the reverse. The reduction in speed is a result of high spin/drag. Average college is 6-8mph and goes up from there. Saw Wilkinson from Georgia regularly bleed 10-12mph with some of her pitches.
