What a crock! ANY private, truly private institution should be able to do whatever the elect to do. Don't like it, don't involve them.

A truly private, exclusive institution - Augusta National Golf Club, for example - can do whatever it wants. That's not being denied or questioned.

But we're not talking about a truly private, non-subsidized institution in THIS case. The authority which rendered the decision in this case works in a facility that is subsidized by the public.

If a football coach decides not to select her for his team for whatever reason, there's no dispute here. If he felt all the other players who tried out were better, then the deal is done. He would not be required to provide a reason as to why she did not make the team.

Subsequent to the archbishop's decision and following the granted extension, however, she was denied the opportunity to even compete for a spot on the team. The archbishop - as the authority of this diocese - stated that his decision is based on her gender.

Really? I did not see that. All I saw was a private youth organization enforcing their rules.

I actually wonder whether the archbishop actually made such a decision or whether it was simply repeated as policy.

Still, don't care. Their game, their rules. You don't like them, find someplace else to play.

My youngest plays volleyball and basketball in the local CYO league. I just sent a letter explaining that we'll not be back and why. Money talks, other local leagues will get ours.

My response is where is she supposed to find someplace else to play? In my area the Catholic league is really the only place to play. Ours lets girls play, but if they didn't, where would she be able to go?

Also, I thought we (USA) were past the "their game, their rules" stage. Some rules (e.g. No Blacks, etc) just don't make sense and I doubt if an organization could survive with such rules.

And as far as I know being a "girl" is not against the teachings of the Catholic church so it can't be some religious thing.

btw... I have a good friend whose daughters go to a Catholic school. His middle daughter started on the middle school football team all three years and led the team in yards rushed, touch downs, kick off return yards and tackles. btw... she played both ways and never sat. Was she big? Nope, probably one of the smaller players out there. She had a blast and it was fun to watch. Once the ball was kicked off, none of the players remembered she was a girl. They just though she was a darn good football player. (pretty good softball player as well... she is a catcher and can really put the hard tag on someone!)

If there is such a demand, start your own league.

There are many organizations that have some level of restriction or another. Then again, the people in this socialist environment have become to think that EVERYTHING is a right, when that is simply not true. What should be true is that if I don't want to associate where certain people for any reason, that is my right. If I choose to create an organization to support that belief, that is my business, no one else's. Why is it that people in this country believe they have to have everything everyone else has. And don't worry about working to develop it, just claim a "right" and force those who have it to share regardless of their willingness.

And as far as I know being a "girl" is not against the teachings of the Catholic church so it can't be some religious thing.

That's good, right up until the last 6 words. But that is not the point. This is the way this organization conducts THEIR business. And the only people who should have the right to change this policy are the benefactors of that organization.

Do I think girls should be allowed to play football? Absolutely. But remember if you want to be "fair", you must support allowing the boys to play whatever sport they elect to play including softball.

While this is certianly getting off the topic, as American's, we clearly can tell an Organization such as the Catholic Church what they can do. They don't have to listen, but that doesn't mean we can't demand they change.

Witness the recent tribulations of the Boy Scouts of America. They have been fighting discrimination charges for years. And not from Gays. (Well, that too.) No, they have been fighting off discrimination charges from girls. Imagine that. The BOY Scouts of America does not openly accept girls. And yet people have issues with it.

The University of Illinois has a choral group called the Black Choir. Any guesses as to the criteria used to select it's members? A government sponsored institution of higher learning allows racism.

On topic, I don't care if the organization allows or doesn't allow girls to play football. It's their right. But I don't approve of the attempt to ban her mid season. That affects her team and why should they be punished?
