I am certainly glad your DD is improving. I am keenly aware of head injuries, since my DD obtained a head injury and a broken wrist when she was thrown from a horse. Symptons worsened over the next hours and she was taken to ER for CAT scan. Fortunately no bleeding or permanent damage, but she was under the care of a neurologist for weeks, even after the symptoms (headaches) were gone. The brain has to heal, and according to the neuro doc, a second injury (even the slightest) during the healing phase can be catostrophic. As much as she protested, no activities until released by the neuro.

In my opinion, you can't be too careful with head injuries. Get to a specialist and don't listen the general doc. As my orthopedic doc says, he can fix anything but head and neck injuries, they alter life.

Good luck and I am thinking of her

Right Here For Now
Nanotech, I'm truely sorry for the ordeal your family and DD had to go through. I'm glad that everything is working out though. Our thoughts and prayers for a quick recovery are with you and your family. I also wanted to thank you for the heads up about this. I will definitely be doing some serious reading in the very near future; like now. Please keep us updated on Emily's recovery.

In BB this year my daughter has had a deep knee bruise, sprain ankle and a jammed finger. The other day one of the boys BB players had his leg cut from under him and landed on his face. It ended up he had had a broken cheek bone and a concussion. He did not know where he was when he came off the floor; he sat on the bench with an ice pack on his head the remainder of the game. His parents took him to the hospital later.

I think we all including coaches, parents and doctors have a lot to learn about this injury.

Did anyone see the CNN special “Big Hits Broken Dreams” that aired Sunday?

It's funny, when I took my DD to the Dr. Sat morning, there were at least 6 other kids in there with BB uniforms on. Knees, ankles, wrists, and one bloody (broken?) nose, and this was before noon. I don't think my DD will be playing next year, if I can help it. :(

Even as manager, I would require her to wear a helmet. With my luck, she would get hit with the ball, during warm ups.

You really need to write out this complete story, when things settle down, so we can distribute it.
Amy, I will write down the whole complete story,I go to the libary here at the hospital when my dd wants to take a nap.She likes her naps now and then,so it gives me sometime to sit down and share with others. The Dr's are very happy with her progress, she is still taking a med. to keep the fliuds in her head down, they are lowering the dose a little at a time. What that means to us is that she will stay longer, but I like that because it gives the Dr's more time to watch her.Emily on the other hand is ready to go home.I had a good talk with her about softball this year, and she is all right with missing a year,I told her when the Dr. clears her she can practice pitching, and her hitting, but I was not letting her go out and play games this year.We decided it will give her sometime,to go and watch some college games and get out to Akron,Ohio and watch the Racers play a few games. She also wants to go to Boston, and watch her Redsox play,I told her that might be a hard one,to get tickets. Her favorite player is Dustin Pedroa,Emily, I think has a crush on him,"I know she is 13yo and it will change" but she just loves him because he is a smaller player and is that player that some would over look.Sorry started to ramble, but spirts get higher everyday,we will have more time to do those things this year,we will still go to alot of her TB team games but, maybe not the far away ones.

Glad to hear your DD is improving Nanotech . We will continue praying for a full recovery .

My DD took the SAC today and failed so she will have to re-take the test again tomorrow . She will not get to advance in her treatment and be reintegrated with her squad until she goes through about 6 more steps AFTER she can pass the SAC . Right now she is pretty dissapointed as they are just now going into the cheer competition season that she has been working towards since June . I am glad they are taking this seriously for her sake but understand her frustration since the cheer competition season only runs about a month long and she may miss all of it due to a concussion .

I have sat and read through all of this numerous times and I am just sick to my stomach. Nano, I am so happy you have stayed on this and kept taking her back. I am praying for a full and quick recovery for her.

All of my kids, well except the little girl who is only 2, play sports. I have always been worried about my oldest, who is a football player, and his chances of a concussion. He has had one, but luckily it wasn't on the field and it was during offseason, and also mild.
My oldest DD had one a few years ago that I posted about on your other post where they were base running without helmets and she was hit in the temple. She had nerve damage on the left side of her face for well over a month.

What scares me the most after reading about your Emily, is my youngest son has a bleeding disorder, baseball (and basketball) are some of the few limited sports he is allowed to play. I wonder how I would have handled it, and if I would have acted soon enough to thwart permanent damage (or worse). Thank you for making all of us more aware and diligent.

Let your little one know that prayers are coming her way from Oklahoma. Please keep us up on her progress!!

Emily gets to go home tommrow,no school until her follow up appt. in 2 weeks, then the Dr. only wants her to go half days for 2 weeks.Emily cant wait to go home,I dont blame her,I have been ready to go to.She still has swelling in nerves of her eyes, but she will go to the her local eye Dr. for him to keep a close eye on her, they say that the swelling in her eyes could take sometime to go down. But she gets to see the beauty of this world and that is what matters the most.I have to say thru this all,I have a new sense of how we are all connected to each other and people are good.I might never meet any of you on this board face to face, but with all the prayers for Emily,I call you all our friends
