Thanks SL. Really interesting article. So many times on these forums posters have talked about what Miggy is doing and comparing to what kids should do and I keep thinking every vid they are providing is of inside pitches. He sure can:
Max Scherzer, the Tigers starter who went 21-3 this season, said he was sure an inside pitch from the Yankees' Phil Hughes this summer was going to nail Cabrera's back leg. Then Cabrera pulled his weight back, dropped his hands inside the pitch and yanked it over the left field fence for a home run.

And I don't think Miggy:

Falls into this series of experiments:
Glenn Fleisig, a biomechanist with the Alabama Sports Medicine Institute, has conducted a series of experiments on what happens to the bat and the body as they go through the swing motion. According to Fleisig, hitters generate the bulk of their power from pushing off the ground

What is with the back foot seemingly sliding away towards the outside of the box in those front view swings. It happens on many of the swings. especially swings 3,4,5. Very noticeable. What is that?

Exactly, the opposite of what happens in Bonds swing.

what is that?

A little bit different in mechs, and they all show a bit different per location and timing.
BUT
Just speculation, but I have always thought that Bonds lets his launch freely keep going after contact...all in then kind of freewheel.

Miggy kind of dampers his momentum after contact. So his rear leg isn't getting yanked around.

Others may (Upton comes to mind) stop their swing soon after contact.

That being said...Miggy always looks like he gets weight forward early to me...could be that a lot of the gifs are inside pitches...or could be I just can't figure it out...at least according to the article, I am in good company.

That rear foot looks like counter balance to me. Or he may be getting his foot into position to run the bases.
