    Knee Tendonitis

We have a catcher on our team, 12 years old, that was just diagnosed with tendonitis in her knee. She has just completed her first junior high season of volleyball which lasted about 10 weeks. In this time, she was catching at practice 3x/week for about 45 minutes, going to a weekly catching...

OK, OK, I'm sold!!! Now the Question: GameFace or Rip-It??

DD is a pitcher. Last year at 11 she was pitching against a 2nd year 12U team. Ump was squeezing the plate, the backstop hung over the infield making it impossible to pop up to the infield and our ace pitcher was suddenly nursing a sore arm. DD was having a tough game. This huge girl shot...

    IR/drop explanation of spin

I don't understand a lot of the physics behind pitching. All I know is my DD was 11 when taught the drop and it took months and months for her to even throw 1 out of 10 that would actually drop. It was very frustrating. When she turned 12, her pitching coach decided to move on and taught her...

    Defensive face mask comparison?

My DD was the same...tried the Defender and hated it. Really, the pressure on the forehead hurt no matter how we adjusted it. Bought the Game Face and she could barely see. Last spring we saw a few girls on another team wearing the Rip-it. She was mortified as I walked right up to one of the...

    I need tournament prep help!!!

Pop-up tents are an absolute must. Also a rolling cooler is your best friend. I like packing breakfast/lunch in case there's no concession stand. Once I'm at the field, I like to stay the day. Many parents will leave the site so make sure they know what time to be back. I recommend that if...

Is a fielding Face Mask necessary?

My DD who has a fall bday was pitching as an 11 year old last year. She is big for her age but still 11. She faced a team who had all 13 year olds, an ump who wasn't giving the edges of the plate and a field where the backstop hung over the infield halfway down the line so every infield pop up...

    Softball Practice - Top 10

Always end practice with some kind of game/competition, even if it's a simple relay race around the bases. :)

    Afraid of an inside pitch.

This reminds me of a funny story and the point I knew my DD was no longer afraid of getting hit with a pitch. It was a long hot double header over 90 degrees and very humid. She had pitched the whole game and was up to bat in the last inning. The pitch came right at her and she let out this...

Taking it easy on weaker teams?

Then the tournament director would have to return the team's money and we all know that will never happen. I like the idea of asking the coach what they want the winning team to do. But if the guy's an idiot, you could be asking for trouble.

Taking it easy on weaker teams?

Well, this is not SoCal and there isn't a variety of tournaments to choose from. Like I said, our team was young, wasn't planning on a pitcher injury and the other 2 completely imploding. It happens...they were 9. But some good did come of it. The girls didn't like it and they have worked...

Taking it easy on weaker teams?

Interesting conversation. What I've seen most people do is signal the ump for the leaving the base early call. Back in the day, we used to bunt back to the pitcher with the coach promising it wouldn't affect our BA. A few years ago, we were a very, very young 10U team, just starting out. We...

    Energy in the morning

Don't know about the energy boost but our team was so flat in the early games this fall that the coaches told them we are practicing at 7 am when we get back outside in the spring. The theory is they will get used to playing early. Time will tell if that works.

    2010 Anderson TechZilla

You don't have to sell it. Call Anderson, they will take it back. They have the best customer service of any company I've ever heard of. Although, if it were me, I'd give your daughter a chance to swing it and get used to it. My DD loves that bat more than anything in the world!! She had...

Who catches your pitchers in practice?

The catcher on our team comes to my daughter's pitching lesson every week. That has helped her track the pitches and has definitely created a bond between them. Before games, we usually have a parent warm up the pitchers...preferably not the parent of the pitcher as that pre-teen relationship...

    Helmet colors

For 30 bucks, go buy a new helmet. The padding on the inside must be shot after 3 years, no?

    Pitching Lessons or Not?

Another reason to get lessons early is injury prevention. It's true that bad mechanics are hard to fix later but they can also lead to injuries, even in 10 year old girls. My DD wound up in physical therapy 3 times a week at 9 years old for her non-throwing shoulder. They are growing so...

    TechZilla

Yes the bat does weigh more. They call it the swing weight. It's not end loaded, the extra weight is in the knob. Do not let the extra weight deter you. Keep swinging it and practicing with it...you will not be disappointed!!! My daughter learned to swing it and loves that bat!!!

    DD working on the tee

Thank you everyone. I didn't realize this post got bumped back up. Since I posted that video, DD has gone to a hitting camp and lessons with the most recommended coach in our area. She has shown significant improvement mechanically and mentally. While she still has some ugly looking swings...
