Watch out for that tree!!!!
Thank you for the replies. I totally agree that a ball hitting any part of a tree in foul/dead ball area should be not be called a catch. I was just wondering if there was another rule reference that covers this when I make my case to get this rule changed. Catch/in flight should be enough, but...- umpodie

Ok, I have a question about a ground local for our local league. USA softball rules. One field has a tree that is about 75% in dead ball area, the rest hangs a bit over foul ball area, none of this tree (at the moment anyway) is in any part hanging over fair territory. Well, one said a pitch is a pitch until controlled by the defense (or hit by batter, or hit batter). So with that one, I believe they'd say two bases.- umpodie

Comp, I agree, not everything is spelled out, sometimes it takes a mix of a few different rules too. Seeing as how I am, so far, the only one in my group saying two bases, I was hoping to find something to help back my case.- umpodie

Well, I did find the ruling comp posted, but not being a pitch didn't get far with it. I also used your argument, djcarter1966, but used speedy R1 on first almost on 3rd, being sent back to 2nd because of 'accidental' kick. Greenmonsters. I would think your 'what if' doesn't really change things much. Interference doesn't have to be intentional, so we still have interference by a retired runner/teammate...so we have a dead ball and an out. After seeing this is the rules supplement "Umpires only need to judge whether the balls moves from the bat "sharply" and "directly" versus a ball that has a preceptible arc and/or the catcher moves their glove/mitt to catch the ball after contact with the bat."
