As a parent, they have the same concerns we do (girls' education, social time, time away from school, expenses, lessons, etc.). The coach with the daughter on the team is going through the journey we are with us, and it just seems to go better. Also, the coaches with no daughter on the team play favorites just as much (or more) than the parent coaches.

half of it is scheduling, especially at lower levels. So when the coach knows "oh, half these girls half girl scouts on wednesday at 4, and 3 of them do dance monday nights.." it helps.

At the less serious/rec type levels, it's probably the coaches kids who is working the hardest by default. They're typically there first and leave last. They're probably less likely to skip a practice or a game. They probably have more equipment at home too, extra balls, pitching nets, etc. Parent might be less likely to coach if the kid is wishy washy about even playing, meaning you've already selected out some less committed types.

Even major league/professional managers play favorites. It's only human. You see something, believe in someone's skillset, etc and give them more chances.

We’ve had our best experience with dad coaches.

Honestly, I think their daughter’s attitude is more important than her skill level. Dad teams with head cheerleader daughters have been awesome so far. Both times the daughter was a power hitter 1st base with a super positive vibe. We’ve been on two grumpy pitcher daughter teams and those had some frustrations. I would have benched the kids over bad attitude- but they just kept playing never sitting all season.

You were on my team?

Kidding..my daughter's only grumpy on the mound if I try to correct/suggest feedback.

After she threw a fit on the mound did you move her to shortstop and put your 3rd baseman on the mound and allow your daughter to loudly sob while repeatedly telling my non-pitcher daughter just trying to get out of the inning that she didn’t understand why she couldn’t just throw strikes. While other kids were sitting on the bench?

Ah there were some good life lessons to be had there. My daughter did start taking pitching lessons.

although i still internet scout a ton when the DDs are playing for someone else

I used to love gamechanger for trying to figure out which pool games were our toughest, etc

i'd look kids up on twitter.......i've even googled their name and their state.....ie "sally jones massachusetts softball" just to see what i could find out about their high school performances, and try and extrapolate that over to travel

we're a depraved lot

I laughed a little too hard at this. Hit way too close to home. I thought I was alone in looking up the most useless scouting reports to prepare for games.

It was surprisingly effective in terms of setting my pitchers for pool play

Yeah that is primarily what we used it for. I would rank the teams 1-3 based on what I perceived their difficulty was. More times than not it helped with strategy.

I am even worse when it comes to scouting future high school opponents. I look up every high school stat and travel ball stat I can find for any team I don’t know well.

Parent coaches are good for travel if their kid is at the level they are competing.
Parents coaching in our jr high league was hit or miss.
It is ok for a coach to favor their kid to a point. If they are an 8-9 hitter and bat then 6-7, reward for their time. If they are an 8-9 hitter batting 3rd possibly costing games that is generally not good.

A couple of thoughts. First, I never thought of looking at the coach's DD when judging a team. Instead, it would seem more important to look at the level of play and success of the team itself. Secondly, I have found that often people aren't good at judging the actual abilities of coach's kids.
