Wanted to add this mark-up of a "BackDoor Curve".... thinking its just a matter of where you aim

I followed the break... its right where you would need it. Guessing more spin (rps) gets it there, instead just tailing afterwards.

Here is DD's approach @ three locations... Drop, Screw, &....her "CurveSpin"

Taking a BB catcher to task.

Might as well show the other one too...low & high

You can pick it, or guess right... still got to hit it dead center, or you got a foul, pop-up, or grounder...

ALL 12/6 ...Can be confusing... like trying to guess which one of the two Att: above is a .gif

I meant confusing to hitters

Here is from 2yrs. ago... Lighting not good enough for me to shoot in TV, and get good ball spin, but you can still see the tape.

If on a computer, you can expand, its in 1080p, see tape better.... if not take my word... tape straight up...12/6... You can see she is not stepping...left/right. Well maybe a little after watching again... but she wasn't instructed too...

So are the 3 spins that are going to guy all bullet spin or is that an optical illusion from the angel and the slow mo?

With any spin, what matters most is where the last fingertip comes off the ball. With a palm up curve, the middle finger pulls/whips around the outside of the ball and last touches the ball at about 3 o'clock--nearest the body. The middle finger releases at about the same spot for a corkscrew.

I think the corkscrew is much easier to master for smaller hands. Littlejohn, Osterman and the old guy above are long and lanky, which is an advantage with the PU curve. I think the PU curve offers a little more speed and spin, but it's hard to get good spin without a lot of work. For me the trick is getting the wrist cupped enough to stay on the 9-3 path to keep spin flat. Avoiding bullet spin requires twisting the hand back (thumb back and down.) Many have suggested that a crise spin is better than a flat spin. Both of these spins require IR of the upper arm while resisting pronation of the forearm (for me the corkscrew is actually more of a supinating/twisting feel.) Both can benefit from upper arm lock and brush.

If you must have a curve, try both. The process of trying different things encourages feel/awareness for how to manipulate a ball's spin--and it's fun!

Rabbit trail - I was thinking the other night that with the balls marked up in this manner you can use for 2 seam or 4 seam right . . .

If its bullet, then its tumbler bullet... I see it spinning 12/6 (or close) to it on an angle. Point being, they are all 3 the same spin. Its shot @ 60fps in TV mode, trying to catch spin. I need to put a piece of red tape running the other way so I can get a rps... guess :{))

She was just playing with the drop, because her buddy was acting tough, and refusing gear.

Yes... (First pitch low rise @Tee) the first ball was taped for 4 seam...(Second pitch...higher @Tee) was taped 2 seam.
the first one is a nasty pitch...we got a local p/c that's wins lotz with that...up to the belt buckle... but you should see the contortions the pitchers go thru to get it there... You can tell his students a diamond away.

Rabbit trail... maybe, but got the bullseye on a thread topic... Remember CurveSpin ??? One out 4.

Can't remember if you guys post your DD or not... LOL

It is confusing. Not sure if I understand how the same spin has different results?

Same spin on all pitches = the same pitch being thrown, just to different locations.

So one can call it a curve, rise, drop, etc, but if the spin hasn't changed, it is not a true movement pitch.

My DD throws her fastball to the inside and the outside corner. I suppose I could call the inside pitch a screwball and the outside pitch a curve, but they really aren't.

I've wondered....

In a world of coaches/players picking pitches.

See how Littlejohn's wrist is pre-cupped on her back-swing?
Presumably to pre-position her hand/wrist to throw that nasty curveball.

I wonder:
a) Does her backswing look noticeably different on her other pitches?
b) if it does, is that enough time for a RHB to pick and setup to hit the curve?(LHB wouldn't have a good vantage point to see the backswing as well...)
c) if you can pick the curve, even then, could you even get a bat on that nasty thing?!
