I am sold that getting good contact WITH THE HIP/THIGH is the way to go for us.

JJ,

Im confused...

If worn around the upper thigh, my Flapper suggestion encourages *exactly* what you are trying to achieve: brush contact w lower forearm/wrist. Unless youre porportioned like cro-magnon man, that is... ;-) Then, I suppose, you could customize your flapper to fit around your calf?

Also the "sticking straight out" comment confuses me too.
Once on the leg, the band can be rotated to orient the flap so that its "sticking out" from the area where you wish to be making brush contact. So in a way, this device can also serve as a trainer for proper posture and push leg/hip positioning.

Lastly, this using this device has nothing to do with "minor belly brush".

Does that make sense?

There is absolutely no need to have brush interference at the hip or thigh level. Why everyone makes pitching so bizarre and difficult for young pitchers is beyond me. A flap is fine off the thigh (I think BHH talks about it) but you do not need to hit your body. Wow. I really thought the days of that old BS were over. But it lives. All because we can't stand the kid being a bit inaccurate when learning.

And having seen Finch in person at games, she definitely is HE. She gets whip but the HE ain't muscle memory or habit. She does it when warming up and quite deliberately. However, when she throws a rise or screwball, there is no HE, as that would be impossible.

ARE YOU SERIOUS? REALLY??!

Isn't it about time for you to open your eyes ...... and mind????

Sadly, this probably was not a demonstration of how "NOT to pitch" ... but it should have been.

Makes sense- and I will give anything a try. When I have seen this before, it has been used by instructors who advocate a brush of the belly ala the esteemed Mr. Hillhouse, I think Rita Lynn Gillman also has some demos with this also. Neither of them describe the brush in very strong terms so I have associated it with a lighter version of brushing (think sleeve brushing shirt) than what I want to try to achieve. The brush I see and feel is really is more of a bump and roll. I only use the term brush to avoid the OILF flaming that would occur if I implied that a young girl should hit her arm against her hip and thigh while pitching.

JJ, think of the flapper as an intermediary step.

It gets a girl who is used to "clearing out" her hips, or simply delivers the ball with a lot of body arm separation,
to ease into the form of keeping her lower arm/wrist very close to her body at release.
Once this motion is engrained and comfortable, then she could proceed to the roll move you describe.

I think that if you try and get a young pitcher to incorporate that roll move right off the bat,
she will be wacking her side, perhaps painfully, on some of her pitches, and that could become a deterrent.

Baby steps...

After you use the AccraSpeed for a while I think you will be able to interpret when the pitcher is getting brush interference vs. when they just "blow through" the release zone without contact.....especially if you can coordinate this with video. I am pretty sure you can simulate both yourself 'cause I know you are dedicated to learning. I'd be interested to hear your feedback after some trial sessions.
I have tried items like the Perfect Circle but could not get the feel that told me I was getting contact or not.

I played with the Accraspeed yesterday and got a setting where the chirp corresponds to the contact pretty well. Then dialed it in for the DD and let her rip. It didn't work for her since she was afraid of making contact. She has hit her thigh with the ball a few times so she has some phobia about contact. So I gave her a ball of socks, strapped on the Accraspeed and had her throw against the wall while watching TV, told her that this was THE SECRET of pitching and if she will give it a chance then it will greatly help her speed, but more importantly her accuracy. I watched a couple and she seemed to get it immediately. Then I passed her off to the wife and went to older DDs practice. Long story long....I got this little clip about 2 hours later from the better half.

The hand finish is a lot different than normal. it is normally a lot higher when she blows through without contact. Also her posture is different. She usually has a little "clear the hip" lean to her. Either way we will be back at it today with full video to see if I can capture it better. From what I saw yesterday, with the right tools, the right info and more importantly, the right kid, teaching the basics of this might be a breeze. Getting changes into the full motion has always been the big challenge with her, but getting her to understand this was pretty easy.
