Ok umps. What is the rule for sliding in ASA. I am under the impression that you never HAVE to slide, only avoid contact. Right or wrong? Also, can anyone point out where it is in the rule book so I can highlight it? Thanks.
Under standard ASA rules, a runner is NEVER required to slide. There are times when a runner is required to avoid contact. That requirement can be met by sliding or slowing down, reversing direction, stopping or going around a fielder.
There are also times when the runner has every right to remain on her feet and attempt to reach a base.
I don't think you're going to find a single rule that specifically says a runner never has to slide. Rule 8-7-Q defines crashing into a defensive player and Rules Supplement #13 further explains this rule.
Some leagues do write their own rule that says a runner must slide on a close play. That is not the standard ASA rule and is really just a misguided attempt to legislate safety. What those leagues fail to realize is that forcing a player to slide probably creates a bigger safety issue. Most softball injuries happen from sliding, more than being hit by pitched or batted balls or colliding with another player. If you are forcing players to slide- especially players that may not have been coached in the proper techniques and aren't comfortable doing it- you're just creating an unsafe condition, even if it is in the name of "safety".
