Whats the ruling when a slap hitter just sticks their bat out their with very little follow through on a third strike and fouls the ball off. I see this happen occasionally and the umpire never calls it a bunt. Is this addressed in a rule book?
I think its a judgement call, but just because a hitter is moving and she doesnt follow through with the bat, shouldnt this still be called a bunt?

Just curious what umpires think about this situation. It might be one of those things hard to judge.

Is the batter just sticking the bat out and running through the box, or are they actually making a chopping half swing at the ball? Just sticking the bat out and running through the box is not an attempt to hit the ball, it is a bunt attempt. If the batter actually makes a chopping motion at the ball even though the bat doesnt follow through it is an attempt to hit the ball.
