Hello all!
Very quick question: Situation was runner on third steals home on a PB (forth ball), batter takes first (walk) and with a live ball (due to PB) could potentially steal second. Who should be covering second base, second or short? No other runners are on at the time.
Thanks!

With a runner on third it should be 2B. You can do some variation of the below picture. At the younger ages you could have them do it on every passed ball just to ingrain it in their heads. Everybody is moving somewhere! It keeps them focused and in the game....

Why on Earth do we need two fielders backing up home plate (which I assume means backing up the pitcher, who is covering home)?

Because at the younger ages nothing is assured. The same reason why you two outfielders chase down a ball in the gap when you only need one to throw it in.
