Besides the fair/foul issue, there are two major problems visible in this picture IMO. 1. The catcher is always better off turning the 90 degrees necessary to throw to first BEFORE picking up the ball. 2. The first baseman can make this play much easier for the C by moving OFF the bag (into foul territory in this case) to provide an unobstructed throwing lane and then take a step to touch the bag.

I think this sort of stuff is ultimately going to be a problem if it's not already. Folks are used to seeing instant replay in football, hockey, etc. These kinds of calls that are plainly seen by the fan at home and not rectified might lead a new fan to think the NCAA doesn't really care enough to get it right. As a business model, offering what appears to be an inferior product isn't the way to grow your fan base.
