Interesting scenario from this weekend

Runners on 1st & 2nd base. DD hits a hard shot that hits the runner leading off of 1st base. Runner is called out with dead ball and DD is given 1st base. The question that came up was whether the runner on 2nd could advance to 3rd base, or if she had to return to 2nd?

The ump let her stay at 3rd base which the opposing coach was pretty upset about.

Once the ball hits a baserunner the ball is dead. All runners are returned to the last base they had legally touched.

The coach was correct to be upset the runner was not returned to 2nd base. I really doubt the runner on 2nd had made it all the way to 3rd base by the time the runner on 1st was hit with the ball.
