Fastpitch catcher mitts have thicker padding in the palm and toes of the mitt. It is also hinged differently. There are some catchers, even in college, that use 1B mitts when catching, but they are very few.

You can use them, but they are not designed for softball. A baseball catchers mitt has a smaller and more shallow pocket, and if you buy the larger baseball catchers mitt the finger stalls are way too big for the average female. Some parents claim that they buy the baseball catchers mitt for their dd because catching with a softball catchers mitt stings too much. I say either catch the ball correctly or buy a good fastpitch catchers mitt.

So Cal
Lenski is correct. A softball catchers mitt is designed specifically for the needs of a softball catcher, which includes the right size pocket for a softball. There are differences in mitt sizes, and some mitts are made with more padding than others. Which one is the right choice is largely a matter of preference.
