I once saw a picture in the paper of a major league hitter, catcher and umpire. The shot focused on the catcher - who had his eyes closed as the batter was swinging!
Well it looks like a natural phenomenon as evidenced in this pic from last summer. I can't tell if DD's eyes were closed but the ump and catchers were.
From what I've learned in the past it's human nature to blink when contact is persieved. Try the no flinch drill with a catcher, they will blink just before the ball contact their helmet.
