The runner was off base line. The catcher in my opinion was interference. Play ground rules ;)
I think she was out before she got tagged.

To start, the "base line" is irrelevant to the rules. The catcher cannot interfere, no offensive player can interfere, they would obstruct. When OBS, the runner cannot be put out between the two bases where the OBS occurred with a few exceptions involving other violations

So you can go off of base line to avoid being tagged? Looks
sketchy to me.

Baseline and basepath are 2 completely different things and baseline has nothing to do with pretty much any call except fair/foul down 1st and 3rd baseline. Basepath is set by the runner and can be anywhere on the field, the only time they are restricted to 3' either side of that path is when the defender has the ball and is attempting to make a play on them. At that time it is 3' either side of a direct line between the runner and the base they are attempting to reach. The runner changes course before the catcher even has the ball, that right there is the obstruction, once the catcher has the ball the runner never deviates from her path more than 3'.

I have a feeling the answer is simple, but at what point would a "pickle" become obstruction? It seems like you would always be walking a fine line. Obviously game situation dependent, but based on the cost/benefit of a pickle down the third base line, you'd think one would opt to almost never have the catcher attempt to get the out on a run back to third.

To avoid obstruction in a pickle, you teach your fielders to create a lane in which to throw. What good is a throw to someone who's view is obstructed by the runner anyway? Then you teach your runner to get in that lane...;)

Forget the word "pickle" which I never head until a few years ago. The situation is irrelevant. If the defender doesn't possess the ball, s/he needs to get out of the way. The defender must always be aware of the situation

We call this cloudy & clear. The fielders both need to position themselves in clear. If the runner is between them they are in cloudy & need to adjust.
