That's why you teach your outfielders, with less then 2 outs and a runner on 3rd to let a deep, catchable foul ball drop without catching it.

.

I did that in high school about 300ft down RF line and my coach went APE$&@t in the dugout....when he asked me WTH I was doing when I got to the dugout he felt pretty stupid when I gave him the answer in front of everyone.

Significant part of this game is played between the ears! Can’t teach them that too early. Every practice we have a “rule of the day”. Start with basic rules and work up to more complex as the comprehension sets in.

It's not an absolute. But you'll have make adjustments based on your players abilities and strengths.

Probably one of the most heads up plays I have ever seen was this exact situation. Daughters team playing in championship game and were visitors. Tying run on 3rd base in bottom of 7th inning with as I recall 1 out. Batter hits a deep fly ball to left right down the line. F7 gets to the line in time to get set and is straddling the line, I watcher her look at the line, check the ball, look at the line again, go back to the ball and then stepped aside and the ball landed about 6" foul.
