Can ASA "B" players play ASA "A" Tournaments during spring and summer

Hi there -

There seems to be a lot of confusion with this rule. ASA rules...

Can ASA "B" players play ASA "A" Tournaments during spring and summer and still be qualified to play in ASA "B" Championships?

Thank you.

So Cal
In CA*, (my understanding of) the rule is that any player participating - games or practices - with an A team (travel ball) after March 31 is disqualified from playing on a B team (rec all-star). After Nationals, the calendar resets.

So - to answer to your question - No. The player is disqualified from B Championship events.

* Rules may vary from state to state.

If you mean the whole team, yes a B team can play up in A events and still play in B events as long as they meet the definition of a B team in the sanctioning body.

If you mean picking up as a player with an A team, then no. One player - one roster. Player must be dropped from one roster to be eligible for other roster.

Yes. A team can always play up, but never play down. AFA a single player, being on a championship play roster locks that player to that roster and the team's classification. There are a few exceptions (pick-ups, released, etc.), but the simple answer is yes.

And your best point of contact to answer this question is your local ASA Director. Email them and get the response in writing. Both my girls did this several times as guest players and I kept the email in my pocket as there was always a coach who would challenge their eligibility.

As Eric says, different ASA Regions and some metros have different rules. In the new USA/ASA Softball Region 10, a player who plays 'A' after March 31st, is not eligible to play B. Check with your local USA/ASA softball director.
