D's school ball started off with a Saturday tournament. First game, they played against a team that has made their division championship last 5 years in a row. D's team used 3 different pitchers each playing 2 innings. D struck 2 batters out, walked 2, had 1 solid hit against her and 3 fielding errors at shortstop. Lost 5-1. 2nd game, D was the only pitcher from the first game to pitch, she pitched an inning, and 2 other pitchers pitched. We lost that game as well 8-5. D' walked a batter and had a home run hit off her, with 2 runs scored. I personally thought she did a better job against the better team.
Overall impressions from this Saturday:
1)We have plenty of pitchers, 5 out of 6 girls who pitched did well. The other girl didn't do too bad but was getting hit a lot and the defense was struggling.
2)The defense didn't show up, most of the runs were from errors. I know, the coach was moving girls around to see where to put the girls.
3)The batting lineup needed to be changed, the girls who hit well last year, did well this year. We have 3 power hitters that returned. In total, 5 girls batted well, but was scattered throughout the lineup. D wasn't included in this group(she struck out 1, walked 1 and got hbp).
4)Outfield...we have an entire team that plays infield. Someone needs to step up and be willing to help outfield out. Even our best outfielder normally plays infield. We will be playing in a new conference with teams with great bats. The ball will get hit to outfield.

1st regular session game will be Wednesday...hopefully, they show up to play. The team is loaded with talent. All 6 pitchers are their travel ball team pitchers. Every player plays travel ball, even at the JV level. 1/2 the team plays on showcase teams that travel outside of the state...A few girls played in the PGF National tournament in CA. D is one of the few girls who don't play outside of our state...she prefer to spend that money on lessons instead of traveling.

I can appreciate the idea of spending the money on lessons however, there's a ton of value in actual high level game experience. Gotta find a happy medium here.

I agree! At first when my DD started to get more serious about pitching I thought it was crazy to leave the state to play. Now we find ourselves in several states from the east to the west. As it was explained to me "you will never know how good your kid is until she plays the best of the best." Most of us don't live in place that can provide that.

Absolutely...the value of pitching lessons diminishes as the player gets better.

There is more to learn in the circle than there is in a pitching tube.

I live in an area in NC that you can play in a softball tournament in 30 minutes or less in any direction from my house. The farthest tournaments are 45 minutes.

I think being challenged is a good thing. What I have noticed:
Her current team plays in the better division, so they do see competition. Some of the teams they face, do play in national tournaments. They like to use these local tournaments to get ready for bigger tournaments. Overall, her team does well against these teams. They don't play a lot of tournaments, normally 5 a season, taking off all of July and August. These are the months that D look to guest play.
Last time D guest play, she played in the lower bracket. Not any competition(in 6 innings pitched, she struck out 14 batters). I would love to see her play in a big tournament to see how she does and to give her more of a challenge. I think she responds well to new challenges.

As do we...
However we found that traveling to play the best makes the kids better.
