If this is what you mean by "hand pump" ... what I generally refer to as "barrel pump" ... then yes, that is what one is tuning into their swing coming out of the 'upright vee' ... i.e., you initiate your swing with a 'hand up' mentality to perform this action going into/through impact.

I personally give the hitter an action mentally I want done with the hands while implementing the sequence and see if a hand pump emerges. Some do, some don't . I let them be as natural as they can be as long as the sequence is followed and the hands also 'stay up' . Do you think tipping the barrel/pronation is necessary? Or just fluff? I don't teach it. But I can see it having its advantages . As long as the barrel get loaded at the right time , I don't deem it an absolute. As I don't see every high level hitter doing it. But it does look cool!

I believe I better understand what you meant by a 'hand pump' now.

No, it is not an absolute. In fact, it can become a habit that for some ends up having them inadvertently "losing the barrel".

Barrel pump is not just baseball ... softball as well. Many of my hitters will use a pre-swing barrel pump depending on what they are trying to build into short-term muscle memory for their next swing.

I see these hand actions as the 'short to' or 'loading of the barrel' in the swing. Which become par for the swing when the hands know their job.
Do you consider these actions 'turning the barrel'?

No, from a rear arm perspective this is more the cast/throw ... the working/turning/orbiting/arcing of the barrel occurs earlier.

If you have some of my GIFs of 'Around/Along' then it will be more clear ... the 'around' is more akin to turning/working/orbiting/arcing the barrel, and the 'along' is more akin to this action you see here with the barrel pumps.

It's a pretty simply concept.

During the "Around" the barrel is rotated 'around' the rear forearm, whereas during the "Along" the barrel is flailed/cast/sent/thrown 'along' the rear forearm.

I see between the 'short' and 'through'is the 'turn the barrel' ? So it is an action that is not thought of? Just achieved with a proper hand path ?
