Some lucky player just became starter overnight.

Take a break any way you can get it!

Would we care this much (or be as surprised) if these were football or basketball players?? I know it would probably still make the news, but I feel like people overreact when girls get in trouble. They're kids and kids make mistakes. I hope the university and softball team support these ladies and provide them with a path forward instead of shunning them.

At least here locally it seems so many people are defending them because it is just weed and I get that side of it. The problem is that it is illegal in Alabama and against NCAA, SEC, and Auburn rules. I do not think the players careers should be over. Football players are given multiple chances and have done much worse. Remember Tim Williams the LB at Alabama. Caught smoking weed ad 2AM in a Publix parking lot while also possessing a concealed weapon without a permit. He was suspended for one half. He also admitted he failed multiple drug tests at UofA before the combine and he will still be a first round pick.

The players do need to face consequences and I think sitting them this series along with the embarrassment of having their mugshots all over social media will have an impact on them. We all make stupid decisions from time to time and have to pay the price. Luckily I never faced this in college. I realized between alcohol and pot one would get me arrested and the other would be poured out on the ground as long as I didn't do anything stupid like drive or act like a jerk.

This did happen to football players. Of course the outcome was very different. Double standards once again for the money sport.

There was one major difference between the two incidents. The football players didn't do it during the middle of the season. There were other ways to punish them before the season ever rolled around. Missing games is the only option for the girls at this point. A few years ago Nick Marshall was caught with pot and suspended for the opener because it happened close to the first game.

I see it happen often a 18 or 20 yo makes a mistake and, they are convinced to plead guilty by the prosecuting attorney to get it over with, 10 years later they obtain a nursing license or teaching certificate and discovers they can not work in their chosen field due to the conviction. If charges are dropped or they are found innocent or the charges they can apply to have the record restricted, which means in applying for a job the charges will not show up.

I do feel bad for the athletes who made a bad judgment.

Glad to see some thoughtful conversation here and not too much knee-jerk reaction. The girls made a poor choice and now must live with the consequences (a risk that we all take when knowingly making poor choices). I hope those consequences don't extend much past missing this weekend's series and enough public embarrassment to give them pause the next time they're in a similar situation. Hopefully the charges will go away and this doesn't follow them into their futures. God knows if some of the things that I did in college followed me, I'd be lucky to find a relatively clean overpass to live under.

Whatever side of the pot debate you stand on is really irrelevant. In Alabama it's illegal (not to mention prohibited by NCAA, SEC, and Auburn), end of story. Light up at your own risk.

It does beg an interesting question (for you conspiracy buffs out there). Article said that police were called to the location at 12:3something AM. In my experience...you know, from books and movies, 3 people getting high at 12:30 AM are not generally going to cause a raucous. So who called the police? Who stands to benefit? WHO IS FAGAN'S BACK-UP?? ...and yes, I'm kidding around here...kind of.

This story isn't about whether pot should be legal or not. It's not about whether pot is a gateway drug. It's not about a joint being no different than a glass of wine. This is about players who've been given the privilege to represent their school and their sport, knowingly breaking the law, league rules, and team rules without regard to the impact their actions could have on their teammates, school, and their family. Fagan is a huge disappointment because she is a senior leader on the team and you would hope she would be the voice of reason discouraging this type of behavior from her underclassman teammates.
