Yesterday, DD played up and was the backup C for the eventual champions. She held her own going 5 for 6 with 2 walks and 7 rbis. No D3K's, no passed balls, 1 errant overthrow for a pickoff attempt at 1B, and no fielding errors. She caught in one or two innings in all but 1 game and she batted at the bottom of the order and served as a spark plug on several of the team's rallies throughout the day. More importantly, I got to sit in the stands and watch my catcher-beast ball and try to explain to DW why certain things weren't a big deal (like her dribbler to 6 for the only grounder she had for the day). After dropping her last tourney to 3rd place to the eventual champs (when she knew we were the better team), it was good to see her get that nasty taste out of her mouth just before taking a MANDATORY week long break.

It was rather comical to sit there cool, calm and collected while she did really well, then glance to my side and see parents of other girls wondering who's spot DD was coming for.

Parents: Where does she normally play?
Me: Behind the dish
Parents: But what's her secondary position?
Me: Anywhere but the circle. Put her where she's needed.
Parents: Yeah, but where does her team put her?
Me: I put her where she's needed. Depends on the scenario and strategy. Sometimes, it's the dugout.
Parents: Oh, you're her coach? (Deep sigh)
What I Wanted To Say: Until she takes your DD's spot and then walk away grinning inside the entire time.
What I Did Say: Yeah, we're off for 2 weeks and your coach needed help to give his DD a break when needed.
